It’s the thing nightmares are made of: you are a lone web designer and social media manager tasked with re-designing and launching an entirely new website look and feel in less than 30 days.

Re-designing the Re-Design

In early April of 2016 my boss sat me down with our web developer and explained that we were to completely re-organize, and re-design the OneUnited Bank website to be more modern, responsive, and user focused. We needed to find a way to tell the bank’s story, rather than just push bank account offerings and fee structures…and it needed to be fully tested, regulatory compliant, and live by May 10th.

The task was daunting. I built dozens and dozens of wireframes. Scrapped dozens of existing landing pages from the sitemap and gutted the navigation structure. I focused on building a layout and page organization that was focused on human factors: what would I need to see to make me think about banking differently? What would I need to know to feel comfortable opening a bank account online?

After many (and I do mean many) meetings, test layouts, revisions, re-writes, and pitches to the senior leadership team I was able to craft what would become the foundation for web 2.0 for OneUnited Bank. You can check out the before and after photos below, but I recommend visiting the site to see the work in all it’s glory.
